Prilosec (Omeprazole)

Drug Uses

Prilosec is a used in the treatment of diseases like GERD, Zollinger Ellison Syndrome and dyspepsia. It is a proton pump inhibitor which reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. In several cases like ulcers it is prescribed along with other antibiotics like amoxicillin, clarithromycin.

How it is taken

Prilosec comes as both a tablet as well as a capsule which can be taken by mouth with or without food. The capsule must be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing it. Prilosec must not be taken for more than 14 days. Do not stop without consulting your doctor.

The best way to use the drug is as recommended by your doctor.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Prilosec then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

Confusion, drowsiness, dry mouth, flushing, headache, nausea, rapid, heartbeat and sweating are some of the typical symptoms of a Prilosec overdose. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose.

Storage

Store it at room temperature (between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in an air tight container protecting it from direct exposure to light, heat and moisture. Keep away from pets and children.

Precautions

Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, kidney, liver or heart disease or other stomach problems (e.g., tumors).

You must not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using and contact your doctor immediately.

It is unknown whether is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Side Effects

Some of the common side effects that are experienced in the first few days of starting treatment are diarrhea, constipation, stomachache, nausea, gas, loss of appetite, headache and dizziness. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.

Other severe side effects include back or joint pain, nervousness, sleep disturbances, cough, chest pain, unusual thirst, change in amount of urine or vision changes, loss of hair, ringing in the ears, swelling of the stomach or fatigue.

You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
